Cross Country Training Day

18 January 2015

On Sunday 18th January, NCEC held its first cross country training day for 2015 in quite hot conditions.  Riders were split up into groups depending on ability (or ambition) with two of our local instructors, Louise Light and Katja Sykes.

Louise has this to say after the day, “Hi Team NCEC, I was so happy to have the privilege of coming and giving my guidance and knowledge over the Nana Glen course that I have so many fond memories of riding around, this helped the keen cross country stars of the future that were in my classes and I hope that all had a good time and learnt one valuable thing out of the 1.5hr session. I believe I saw improvement in confidence and communication with the combinations that were with me. There was a couple of special mentions, and they were, getting Zoe Walker to jump the ditch, that meant she was able to overcome her fear of ditches and gainied some confidence on her lovely new horse.
The other standout was Sarah and her lovely big bold TB, who has an amazing big jump, this meant that Sarah had a job to stay on. Also Libby with her beautiful soft mare, who has an exceptional attitude and whatever she pointed her at, had a go.
And is sure to be a potential star for her in the future. I look forward to helping them all again soon. The going was excellent and jumps well maintained, so this makes it a wonderful course to keep these morning sessions going for the riders to progress for the future.”

Anne Webster has put together a great rundown from ‘a riders perspective. We hope to bring that to you in the next newsletter What do you need to ride a cross country course? Other than your horse and well-maintained gear, you MUST wear a vest and a helmet.  Nana Glen Equestrian grounds charge a $10 fee to utilise the course. This fee goes to the grounds committee, who maintain the course and keep the jumps in good working order. From time to time working bees are also held and everyone is encouraged to help out.  If you’d like to get involved in eventing or cross country contact NCEC or look at the website for details.

Western Performance Show

25 January 2015

A great day was had by all at the first NCEC Western Performance Show for 2015, held at ‘Hilltop” at Nana Glen on Sunday 25th of January. The undercover arena provided much needed shade from the warm weather and afternoon storm, and the younger horses where out in force.

Judge Leanne did a great job along with her pencillers and helpers, She was only too happy to offer advice, hints and tips to any interested participants after the show.  Western is still getting off the ground for NCEC and if you are wondering what its all about, come out and give it a go. The classes on offer included led classes, English and western equitation, hunter hack and a trail course. This consisted of walking your horse across a wooden bridge; opening a gate, trot poles, backing up your horse between an obstacle and side passing your horse along another obstacle. Definitely not as easy as it first looked.

Ribbons and trophies flowed and high point score points awarded, which go toward the end of year awards.  Champion placings for the day went to: Champion Quarter Horse: Vivienne Clifford & ‘True Perfexion’ Champion Paint: Katherine James & ‘Casey’ Champion All Other Breeds: Karen Groneng & ‘Te Klein Ike’ Supreme Exhibit of Show: Vivienne Clifford & ‘True Perfexion’ For full results, and high point scores from the day, go to the NCEC website. Dates for 2015 western shows to be held at Hilltop are: 25th July and 31st October.
